4 Small Earthquakes Strike Near Hollister Within Minutes Sunday Morning

MENLO PARK (CBS SF) -- The U.S. Geological Survey says a sequence of four small earthquakes rattled the Central Coast area of California Sunday morning.

The first quake, measuring magnitude 3.3, struck at 7:19 a.m. at a depth of 3 miles with an epicenter about 11 miles south southeast of Ridgemark, 14 miles from Hollister.

It was quickly followed by two smaller quakes at 7:22, just seconds apart. The first of these was magnitude 1.3 and the other measured 2.4.

A few minutes later, at 7:31, a magnitude 2.1 quake struck the area, one of the more seismically active portions of the San Andreas Fault, which runs from the Gulf of California to Cape Mendocino on the northern California coast.

Then about 2 1/2 hours later at 10:07 a.m., a magnitude 1.7 quake was recorded in the same area.

Later Sunday, at 11:19 a.m., a magnitude 2.2 quake shook the Calaveras Fault 12 miles east southeast of San Jose.
