Candlestick Park Demolition In Final Stages, Bay Area Sports Fans Take One Last Look
SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) -- Time is running out to catch a last glimpse of Candlestick Park before it's gone for good. The 'Stick opened more than 50 years ago and for months, bulldozers have been tearing away at the stadium that was home to a lot of Bay Area sports history.
"Well there are a lot of us fans that have to see it before goes," said 49ers fan Shelly Fortier.
For a stadium that held do many memories, only a few short days left to say goodbye. As the demolition winds down, the machinery pounds away and mourners come to pay their respects.
"Had to bring my oldest out here to come see it before it was gone," Fortier said.
"The memories I think about the most are tailgating out parking lot." said sports fan Duncan Sinfield.
The job is about 75 percent complete, and most of the remaining structure is actually built into the hillside. For anyone who wants one last photograph, there's really not much left.
Meanwhile, Sinfield is going above and beyond with his photography, by using a drone. "I'm out here usually once a week, trying to get consistent footage of the progress of the demolition," Sinfield told KPIX 5.
A weekly assignment wasn't his first choice. "I was ready for the implosion," Sinfield said.
Instead of an implosion, it's a long goodbye to an old friend, leaving plenty of time to reflect on what has been lost. A monumental part of the city, that's disappearing before our eyes.
