Weekend Magazine: Freedomland, Great Fire, And Caring Hands

Liz Saint John interviews three guests every Sunday morning covering a variety of issues and topics. She talks with representatives from Bay Area non-profit organizations, documentary filmmakers, authors, and professors.
1. The San Francisco Mime Troupe began in 1959 with avant-garde performance events in lofts and basements. And they talk! And sing and dance. Today, the San Francisco Mime Troupe creates and produces socially relevant theater. They present their productions all over the Greater Bay Area and beyond, mostly for free in local parks. Freedomland is this summer's production. It focuses on the issue of the militarization of the police and the relationship between the police and young black men and poor people in general. 2. Boston University Journalism Professor Lou Ureneck writes about a little known piece of history, the brave actions of an American in 1922 who saves thousand of lives. The Great Fire: One American's Mission to Rescue Victims of the 20th Century's First Genocide tells the story of Smyrna, the richest city of the Mediterranean, the great fire, the Armenian Genocide and Asa Jennings, a Methodist minister from New York who evacuated 350-thousand refugees from the shores of Smyrna in Turkey after the great fire. 3. The Caring Hands Volunteer Caregivers Program program
creates one-on-one matches between caring volunteers and seniors in need over age 60 who may be frail, isolated, or disabled. These matches often make it possible for the seniors to stay in their homes and remain independent longer. Volunteers generally provide free, non-medical in-home assistance for one to three hours per week to meet a long-term need. Linda Groobin is the Manager of the program. Listen to the podcast here.
