Woman Killed After 'Messing Around' With Gun At Antioch Home

ANTIOCH (CBS SF) - The death of a 46-year-old Antioch woman who shot herself in the chest with an old gun on Saturday was an accident, Antioch police said Monday.

Patricia Polly was "messing around" with a gun at her friend's house when she accidentally shot herself, acting Sgt. James Stenger said.

"She was looking at it and didn't realize that guns are dangerous," Stenger said, adding that investigators do not know whether Polly
knew the gun was loaded at the time.

Officers responded at about 12:20 p.m. Saturday to a home in the 1300 block of D Street and found Polly suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the chest, according to police. She was pronounced dead at the home.

A friend was home at the time and stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers, Stenger said.

Stenger said the department does not plan to pursue criminal charges in the case.
