BART Closing Transbay Tube During First Weekend In August, Labor Day Weekend For Repairs

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – People who rely on BART to travel between San Francisco and the Peninsula to the East Bay will have to find alternate ways across the bay later this summer. The transit agency will close the Transbay tube for repairs during the first weekend in August and over Labor Day weekend.

While the rest of the system remains open, BART said in a statement that the tube will be closed from Saturday, August 1st through Sunday August 2nd. Over Labor Day weekend, Transbay Tube service would be shut down again from Saturday, September 5th through Monday, September 7th.

"We need to completely rebuild one of the hardest working sections of track in the entire BART system. Once the work is finished, riders can expect a faster, smoother ride between West Oakland and Embarcadero," Paul Oversier, BART's Assistant General Manager for Operations said in the statement.

All stations, except the West Oakland station, will remain open during the Transbay Tube repair work. BART will offer some shuttle buses between West Oakland and the 19th Street station in Downtown Oakland for West Oakland residents.

BART plans to offer bus service between the 19th Street station and the temporary Transbay Terminal in San Francisco, but the agency said these buses are intended "only for those who have no other options." The agency said some customers could see 1 to 2 hour delays.

AC Transit will continue to offer its own transbay bus service throughout the closure. The San Francisco Bay Ferry plans to offer additional service between San Francisco and Alameda, Oakland and Vallejo.
