Pittsburg Police Officer Shot By Suspect; Officer Returns Fire, Hitting Gunman

PITTSBURG (CBS SF) -- A suspect in an attempted murder shot and injured a police officer who was chasing him in Pittsburg Wednesday afternoon, according to Pittsburg Police.

The officer was hit in the leg and after being shot, the officer returned fire and hit the suspect multiple times, according to police.

The incident started at around 11:00 a.m. on the 500 block of E. 12th St. when an officer spotted a man wanted for an attempted murder last night in Concord.

The officer began chasing him and temporarily lost sight of him, police said. When the officer turned a corner, the suspect was pointing a gun at him and opened fire.

Pittsburg Poilce said the officer is a 24-year veteran of the department. He was treated for his leg wound and released.

No word on the condition of the suspect, a 49-year-old Bay Point resident, but his injuries were said to be not life-threatening.

"Officers go to work every day realizing that incidents like this are an unfortunate reality," said a statement from the department. "We are thankful and proud that his training and truly heroic actions guided him through this violent incident.  Our thoughts are with him and his family."
