2 Police Shootings In San Jose Over Six-Hour Span Leave 2 Dead

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- San Jose police are investigating two officer-involved shootings that occurred within six hours between Sunday evening and early Monday morning, leading to the deaths of two men.

"During the summer we have peaks when it comes to crime," Assistant Chief Eddie Garcia said. "What has really increased and what is really alarming is the amount of individuals that are willing to take on police not just in this city but nationally."

Around 6:20 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to a reported stabbing in the area of Virginia Avenue and South 34th Street, police Officer Albert Morales said.

Arriving officers found a man suffering from several stab wounds who was transported to a hospital to be treated for serious injuries, Morales said.

No other injuries were reported.

The suspect fled before police arrived, but was found in the area of San Antonio Avenue and Packing Place, according to Morales.

Two officers shot the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, the spokesman said.

The man was found to be on parole for second-degree murder, Garcia said.

Around 12:10 a.m. Monday, officers responded to a report from a family member who said her intoxicated brother showed up at a home in the 1300 block of San Marcos Drive and threatened to harm himself with a gun, Morales said.

Officers arrived to find the man with a shotgun, prompting two officers to shoot at him, Morales said.

The man retreated to the home and police set up a perimeter around the home because the suspect was barricaded inside, police said.

Officers from the Police Department's Mobile Emergency Response Group and Equipment unit responded and entered the home hours later to find the man died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Garcia.

A total of four officers in both shootings were placed on paid administrative leave, Garcia said.

Police have not released the names of the suspects and officers involved in the two incidents.

Police are wrapping up their investigation into the shootings and will send the cases to the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office, Garcia said.

So far this year, the city has had six officer-involved shootings in the city, three of which were fatal, according to police.

Of the six shootings, three have occurred within the past 10 days, police said.

There were five officer-involved shootings in all of 2014, two of which were fatal, according to police.
