San Francisco Crowned Best Food City In Country By Bon Appétit

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Tourists come to San Francisco to see the Golden Gate Bridge, tour Alcatraz and eat their hearts out. With as much as culinary variety as the produce grown on nearby farms, it's no surprise that magazine Bon Appétit dubbed San Francisco as the Best Food City in the nation.

Restaurant and Drinks Editor Andrew Knowlton sampled the likes of spiced lamb tartare, mussels escabèche served in a tin and numerous other meals over four days to declare San Francisco as the red hot winner.

"You go somewhere and have a dish or a meal—or in this case, several meals—that reenergizes you, jolting you out of the same old same old. That was San Francisco this year," he writes. "I've been doing this professionally for several years now, and I don't think I've ever experienced such a concentration of exciting and invigorating restaurants in a single year, in a single season. Not even in New York."

Knowlton praised Aaron London's vegetarian project Al's Place, Ravi Kapur's Hawaiin inspired cuise at Liholiho Yacht Club and Liholiho Yacht Club's Basque-style tapas bar.

This delicious designation comes one week after Bon Appétit announced six San Francisco establishments made the list of 50 restaurants nominated for a coveted spot on the Bon Appétit Hot 10 America's Best New Restaurants -- the most of any city.

Knowlton said two of those restaurants scored spots on Bon Appétit's Hot 10 list, but we'll have to wait until August 18 to find out which ones.
