Bon Appétit's Top New Restaurant In America Comes From SF

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - The hottest new restaurant in America looks like a classic San Francisco neighborhood restaurant but mixes up vegetarian-leaning cuisine in a way that really wowed the food critics at Bon Appétit.

The foodie magazine is out with this year's list of what it calls "The Hot 10: America's Best New Restaurants 2015," and they landed on Al's Place in the mission as the top pick.

"To fully appreciate our restaurant of the year, step inside the obsessive, fanatical, and wildly creative world of Chef Aaron London. Trust us, it's worth the trip," Bon Appétit says in the latest ranking.

Bon Appétit editors say California restauranteurs are finding success combining the region's bounty with the high-end technique of some other markets.

"What's interesting about (Al's Place) is that it's a vegetarian forward restaurant," said Bon Appétit Deputy Editor Andrew Knowlton. "I think this ushers in a new wave of fine dining. It's basically a neighborhood restaurant, but you're getting this super-creative level of food...that you would expect in fine dining."

San Francisco - and The Mission District specifically - also held down the number eight spot in the latest list. You can see the full results here.

Knowlton and Editor-in-chief Adam Rapoport joined "CBS This Morning" to share the full list and explain how they came up with the ranking. You can check out that interview here.
