Stray Bullet From San Francisco Marina Shootout Hits Bed Of Sleeping 5-Year Old

MARINA (CBS SF) -- Police were seeking suspects connected to a Monday night shooting in Marina, in which bullets struck several vehicles, as well as an apartment with a 5-year-old child inside.

At 10:06 p.m., officers responded to the 3000 block of Owen Avenue for multiple calls regarding shots heard in the area, according to police.

When officers arrived, officers found several parked cars damaged by handgun rounds, police said.

Witnesses told police it appeared a group of approximately 10 to 15 teens had gathered in the center of Owen Avenue, south of Hillcrest Avenue, police said. Witness said the teens were involved in a loud and heated verbal confrontation.

When an uninvolved vehicle passed slowly around and through the crowd, someone within the crowd fired approximately 9 rounds from a handgun, striking the passing vehicle and several other parked cars along the east curb area of Owen Avenue, according to police.

The crowd dispersed after the shots were fired and prior to police arriving, police said.

Police determined the passing vehicle was not involved or connected to the confrontation.

An errant round also pierced the wall of nearby upstairs apartment and struck the bed of a five-year-old who was asleep at the time. The child was not hit or injured, according to police.

The incident remains under investigation and police believe it is gang-related.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is advised to contact the Marina Police Department at (831) 884-1210.
