Shark Bites Kayaker's Foot At SoCal Beach
LOS ANGELES (CBS) -- A large hammerhead shark bit a kayaker's foot at a Southern California beach Saturday.
It happened just before 3 p.m. a few hundred yards off Deer Creek Beach, between Point Mugu and Carrillo State Park in Malibu. Witnesses said the hammerhead was 10-feet long.
The victim, a man in his 20s, dipped his foot in the water and the shark bit him. His friend Kyle Hudgins described the incident.
"We saw this fin and then it dove and I didn't see it for like five minutes," said Hudgins. "Then all of a sudden he had his foot over the side and he just got bit and then he put his foot up on the kayak and he was like, 'dude I just got bit'."
Lifeguards said a Good Samaritan on a fishing boat pulled the man out and helped control the bleeding. He was airlifted to Los Robles Medical Center in Thousand Oaks and treated for deep cuts on his right foot. Doctors said he did not lose his limb.
The beach remained open after the attack.
There have other shark encounters along Southern California shores in recent weeks. Just last weekend hammerhead shark circled a group of kayakers at La Jolla Shores in San Diego County prompting authorities to shut down that beach for 24 hours.
