San Francisco Man Dies When Boats Collide Off Santa Catalina Island, 3 Hurt

SANTA CATALINA ISLAND (CBS Los Angeles) -- The U.S. Coast Guard on Sunday continued its search for a missing boater after a deadly vessel collision overnight in the water off the coast of Santa Catalina Island.

The crash between a boat and a dinghy took place northeast of Casino Point near Descanso Bay after 1 a.m. Sunday.

"We received a report from a good Samaritan reporting that a dingy with five people aboard collided with another vessel about a quarter-mile off Descanso Bay, Catalina," Sondra-Kay Kneen of the Coast Guard told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO.

Deadly Boat Collision

One person was killed and three others were injured. The injured boaters were taken by helicopter to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, the Coast Guard said. Two of the boaters had minor injuries, while a third sustained a head injury.

The identities of those involved have not been released by authorities. However, a man and a woman who identified themselves as the fatality victim's parents on Facebook said their son, named Michael, was from San Francisco and was on the dinghy with his girlfriend, who was also injured in the accident.
