1 Arrested In Video Game Store Armed Robbery In Morgan Hill; 1 Suspect At Large

MORGAN HILL (CBS SF) -- One suspect has been arrested and a second suspect remains at large in an armed robbery at a video game and electronics store in Morgan Hill on Saturday, police said Tuesday.

The robbery occurred around 10:30 a.m. Saturday at a GameStop store at 1057 Cochrane Road at the Cochrane Commons shopping center, police Sgt. Carson Thomas said.

The suspects, one armed with a black handgun, entered the business where they cornered two employees and four customers, including a child, into the back of the store, Thomas said.

The suspects stole some of the customers' personal belongings, such as wallets and cellphones, and ordered one employee to open the cash register, police Sgt. Carlo Guerrero said.

The suspects took cash and some expensive game consoles before they left the store, Guerrero said.

No injuries were reported, according to Thomas.

The suspect fled the store in a vehicle later found at Villa Teresa Apartments at 260 Berry Court, according to Thomas.

A witness took down the suspect vehicle's license plate number and that led investigators to the apartment complex, Guerrero said.

A man was seen leaving the vehicle and believed to be hiding in the complex, which prompted a SWAT team to look for him that afternoon, Thomas said.

The search at the complex continued into the night and led to the evacuation of about 20 to 25 residents, who received assistance from the American Red Cross, Thomas said.

The SWAT team looked through about 90 percent of the complex before they turned over the search to the Santa Clara County sheriff's SWAT team around 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Thomas said.

The suspect, who was only described as a man in his mid- to late 20s, was taken into custody at the complex around 10:30 a.m. Sunday and booked into county jail, according to Thomas.

Thomas said he believed the evacuated residents have been allowed back inside their homes.

A second suspect remains at large as of Tuesday, he said.

Investigators are looking into whether Saturday's robbery is linked with other cases within the county, Thomas said.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call police Cpl. Scott Purvis at (408) 799-2101.
