Amazon To Release $50 Tablet In Time For The Holidays

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Amazon is coming out with a tablet that costs half the price of its current Fire HD, and a fraction of the cost of Apple's iPad.

The device will have a 6-inch screen and a mono speaker. Industry analysts speculate the battery life will be shorter than more expensive tablets.

Currently, the Amazon's least expensive tablet is the Kindle, which sells for $79.

The Seattle-based company plans to release the device in time for the holidays.

Meanwhile, Apple is expected to introduce new versions of its iPad and iPad Mini tablets on Wednesday.
