Raiders Sign Former 49ers LB Aldon Smith

ALAMEDA (CBS SF) -- The Oakland Raiders have signed former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith, who was released by the team after a series of off-field troubles.

The Raiders confirmed late Friday morning the deal first reported by Bleacher Report NFL reporter Jason Cole. The deal is reportedly for one year, however terms of the deal were not immediately available.

ESPN reported Smith would be eligible to play Sunday for the Raiders, while the league sorts out what discipline he would receive following his latest arrest last month.

The Santa Clara County District Attorney's office said Smith currently faces three misdemeanor charges of DUI with a prior conviction, hit-and-run with property damage, and vandalism.

He is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges October 6.

The 49ers released the All-Pro linebacker on August 7 a day after his arrest, his third since he entered the league in 2011.

"Aldon is an extremely talented young player," said Raiders Head Coach Jack Del Rio in a team press release. "We welcome him to the Raiders family and expect him to bring his best every day and be a great teammate."

"We are confident that the Raiders provide an environment where Aldon can thrive through the support, structure and leadership within the building," said General Manager Reggie McKenzie in the statement. "We are excited to have Aldon here in the Raiders family."

Smith served a nine-game suspension last season for violating the league's substance abuse and personal conduct policies.

Smith missed five games in 2013 to undergo treatment after another DUI arrest. Later that year he pleaded not guilty to felony weapons charges, stemming from a June 2012 party at his home where an assault weapon was fired.

He also was arrested April 13 at Los Angeles International Airport for allegedly making a bomb threat. No charges were filed.

Smith was the 49ers' top pick in the 2011 draft, and the seventh overall.
