5 Stats That Stand Out From The 49ers Season Opening Victory Over The Vikings

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - Harbaugh who? The 49er season opener against the Vikings was at least as lopsided as the 20-3 final score would lead you to believe, and it likely brought many grumbling members of the "49er Faithful" back on the bandwagon.

The end of the offseason couldn't come soon enough for the 49ers after watching Jim Harbaugh, Patrick Willis, Frank Gore and several other big names walk out the door. The losses were tough on fans who had grown accustomed to competing for Super Bowls. There were even rumblings from Lombard Street to the El Camino Real that fans would be switch allegiances to the other side of the Bay. But that's all been quieted now thanks to the first victory of the Jim Tomsula era (and an absolute stinker turned in by the Raiders). Now Niner fans can safely pull out the morning paper and check the box score. There's a lot to like in there, but also some areas of concern. Here are the numbers that jumped out to us:

Rushing Yards For Carlos Hyde - 168
The former Ohio State star showed promise at times when he filled in for Frank Gore last season, but nobody who stashed him on a fantasy team was bragging about it at the end of the season. Chances are the person who rolled the dice in your league was chirping loudly Monday, as Hyde cranked out 168 yards and two TDs. That led the league in yards and earned enough fantasy points to lead the league in most scoring formats. If he can average even half of that over the course of the season, it will take serious pressure off of Colin Kaepernick and the passing game. Kaepernick's 41 rushing yards won't hurt there either.

Jarryd Hayne's debut - 13 yards rushing and a lost fumble
Hayne's debut will be remembered for the lost fumble, but the former rugby star actually got more touches on offense (5) than famed NFL veteran Reggie Bush (2), who left with an injury. That's not bad for a guy who's been playing football less than two months, and could signal a bigger role to come as Hayne learns the playbook, especially if Bush misses any time.

Sacks Allowed - 1 (and that's debatable)
Credit it to Colin Kaepernick's escape ability, the running game keeping the Vikings on a backpedal or just flat out great line play, but the Niners gave up just one "sack" on Monday, and even that one was a net loss of zero yards.

Tackles for NaVorro Bowman - 7
There were concerns that Bowman would not be the elite linebacker he was when he last took the field in 2013. He proved that wrong quickly. Bowman tied for the team lead with 7 solo tackles and didn't look too far off of his All-Pro form from two seasons ago.

Penalties - 8 for 57 yards
The first half of that game was flat out sloppy. Jim Tomsula preaches doing the little things right and the 49ers were not doing that for the first 30 minutes. If they hadn't shot their own drives in the foot with penalties in the early going, this game could have been a big blowout.
