NYC Schools Join San Francisco, Will Offer Computer Science To All Students

NEW YORK (CBS SF) -- The nation's largest school district will reportedly make computer science courses available to all students, joining public schools in San Francisco and Chicago.

According to The New York Times, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is expected to announce a plan requiring all of the city's public schools to offer computer science within the next 10 years.

Currently, less than 10 percent of schools in the city offer any computer science education and only 1 percent receive training.

The city said 5,000 teachers would be needed to meet its pledge to offer computer science at all levels of schooling.

Earlier this year, the San Francisco Unified School District approved a plan to phase in computer science education to all students from preschool to the 12th grade.

The Times reported Chicago is mandating one year of computer science education for high school students by 2018.

According to the district, New York City public schools educate more than 1.1 million students at more than 1,800 campuses.
