Good Samaritans Rescue Double Amputee, Another Victim From Burning Vallejo Home

VALLEJO (KPIX 5) -- Good Samaritans sprang into action in Vallejo Thursday night when two people became trapped in a house fire.

Smoke was billowing from the home on Kentucky Street when neighbor Tygin Paschal realized the house was on fire.

"I dropped what I was doing, and I actually seen the smoke, and I came running. I heard the person calling for help and everything so I immediately ran in there.  My eyes was burning from the smoke," Paschal said.

Inside the home, Paschal found a fiery nightmare.  He and a city worker who happened to be nearby could only follow the sounds of a man's voice inside the home.

"I couldn't really see. I had to feel my way through the smoke," Paschal said.

It wasn't until Paschal reached the man that Paschal says he realized he was a double amputee who used a cane.  Paschal and the city worker carried the man out of the home as flames raged around them.

After rescuing the disabled resident, Paschal and the city worker went back into the home to save another victim, who ended up with second- and third-degree burns.

Firefighters say the home was a total loss, and the two men were lucky.

"Everything in the house was either touched by fire, or heat damage," Vallejo Firefighter Mark Libby said.

Paschal says he's grateful he and the city worker were there.  He got the only thanks he needs from the homeowner.

"He told me thank you for saving his life," Paschal said.
