Suspect Shot By San Jose Police Had Allegedly Tried To Grab Officer's Shotgun
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- A man injured in a shooting with officers Thursday evening in South San Jose was identified today as 50-year-old Ronald William Woods, a police spokesman said.
The involved officer was Officer Daniel Morales, who is on paid administrative leave and has two years of experience in law enforcement, police Sgt. Enrique Garcia said.
Around 6:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of a welfare check in the 6100 block of Monterey Road, where Woods allegedly threatened to kill himself, Garcia said.
Morales saw Woods in the area of Monterey Road north of Southlake Drive, according to Garcia.
Woods approached the right front side of officer's police vehicle and asked for Morales' gun, Garcia said.
Morales stepped out of the car to speak with Woods, who was able to reach into the car through an open window and ransack a bag in the front passenger seat, according to Garcia.
Woods did not follow the officer's commands and the officer deployed a Taser and pepper spray on the suspect, which had little effect on him, Garcia said.
Woods went to the driver's door of the car that was left open and made his way inside, where he grabbed a shotgun and tried to remove the firearm from its rack, according to Garcia.
Morales commanded Woods to leave the vehicle and get on the ground, but Woods continued to pull at the shotgun, Garcia said.
Morales thought Woods successfully got the shotgun and fired at him while the suspect turned to face him, according to Garcia.
Woods ended up on the ground, at which point more officers arrived to the scene, Garcia said.
The 50-year-old man continued to disobey officers' commands and attempted to lift himself up from the ground, according to Garcia.
A second officer shot a 40mm less lethal round at Woods, who was soon after taken into custody, the spokesman said.
Woods was treated at the scene by emergency crews before he was transported to a hospital for at least one gunshot wound, Garcia said.
As of this afternoon, Woods was in stable condition and is being treated for injuries not considered life-threatening, Garcia said.
Woods will be booked into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of attempting to take a firearm from the presence of an officer and attempted grand theft of a firearm, Garcia said.
The incident marks the city's ninth officer-involved shooting this year. There were a total of five officer-involved shootings last year.
The San Jose police homicide unit is investigating the case, which is being monitored by the department's internal affairs unit and Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office.
