Oakland 580 Eastbound Lanes Reopened Following Suspect Search

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Police searching for robbery suspects in Oakland temporarily closed part of Interstate 580 eastbound Monday afternoon and set up a perimeter around a neighborhood.

The California Highway Patrol said it was assisting Oakland police in the search. An Oakland Police spokeswoman said several people had been detained but the search was continuing for others.

The incident started around 3:30 p.m. when four robbery suspects left their SUV on I-580 near 98th Ave. and fled on foot.

CHP and Oakland police swarmed the area of Oak Knoll Blvd. and Granada Ave. just north of the Oakland Zoo, using helicopters and K-9 units to track the suspects.

The offramp to 98th Ave. from eastbound 580 was also closed. Two lanes of eastbound I-580 were closed initially; the CHP reopened one lane as they investigated the scene where the SUV was left behind.

All lanes were reopened as of 5:40 pm.
