3 Arrested In Portland In Slaying Of Prominent Therapist Along Fairfax Trail

SAN RAFAEL (CBS SF) -- Three people have been arrested in the murder of a prominent therapist who was shot along with his dog along a hiking trail near Fairfax earlier this week.

The Marin County Sheriff's Office spokesman Lt. Doug Pittman said two men and a woman were arrested at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday afternoon in Portland outside a community dining hall.

Authorities identified the suspects as 24-year-old Sean Angold, 23-year-old Morrison Lampley and 18-year-old Lila Alligood.

They are suspected of murdering 67-year-old Steve Carter, founder of the Lake County-based Ecstatic Living Institute along with his wife Lokita Carter. The couple are reknowned for their instruction in tantric massage and yoga.

The three suspects were in the Carters' car, a Volkswagon Jetta wagon, when they were arrested, said Pittman.

Surveillance video from a Marin gas station convenience store captured 30 minutes after homicide helped track suspects, said Pittman, along with a large number of tips from the public.

GPS technology also helped Portland authorities track the car, he said.

The video captured two of the suspects and the photo of the other man was taken by an alert citizen, according to the sheriff's office.

Investigators were en route to Portland to interview them, he said.

Carter had moved back to California from Costa Rica to care for his wife during her treatment for breast cancer at the Marin Cancer Institute in Greenbrae, according to Lokita Carter's personal blog.

Carter's body was found on a hiking trail in the Loma Alta Open Space Preserve by a hiker around 6 p.m. Monday, police said. His Doberman Pinscher also was shot and was still leashed to Carter. The dog was still alive when found.

In her blog, Lokita said her husband had been going to yoga daily and took two-hour walks with his dog.

A GoFundMe page set up in June to help pay for Lokita's cancer treatment featured an update Wednesday morning with the news of Steve's death.
