Suspect Escapes From Custody Of Bail Bondsmen In San Jose

SAN JOSE (KPIX 5) – Police in San Jose are searching for a suspect who managed to escape from the custody of two bail bondsmen at the Santa Clara County Jail Wednesday afternoon.

According to police, 30-year-old David Nghounoi was able to escape from the lobby of the jail, while still in handcuffs.

"I've been here 25 years and this is new one for me, having him escape from the bail agents so close to the jail," said Lt. Rick Weger of the San Jose Police Department.

Officers went block by block near the jail, searching for the suspect. Police went door to door, searching yards, vehicles and even trash cans.

"I just got off work and this is my path home and I just saw a bunch of cops." said David Crawley of San Jose.

Police said Nghounoi has two felony warrants totaling $400,000. The warrants are for burglary and for assault with a deadly weapon.

Residents last saw Nghounoi in the area of Second Street near Hedding Street around 2:30 p.m. Police said it is possible that a family member picked him up and investigators are trying to track down relatives as well.

Nghounoi is described as thin, standing 5'11", with a tattoo on the right side of his neck.
