Driver Chased By Cops Crashes In Oakland, Leaves Injured Daughter Behind

OAKLAND (CBS SF) – San Leandro police are searching for a driver who fled after crashing a vehicle in Oakland during a pursuit Thursday afternoon, leaving behind his injured 6-year-old daughter.

Officers were searching for suspects in an armed home invasion robbery that occurred this morning in San Leandro when they spotted a vehicle resembling the suspect vehicle on East 14th Street in Oakland around 12:45 p.m., according to police.

When they tried to pull the vehicle over, the driver accelerated, leading them on a high-speed pursuit into Oakland.

The driver lost control and crashed into a wall on 85th Avenue as he attempted to turn on to East Street, and then immediately fled on foot with the passenger.

A police dog apprehended the passenger as he fled, but the driver got away, police said.

A 6-year-old girl, the driver's daughter, was found in the back seat of the vehicle with injuries she suffered in the crash. She was taken to a hospital for treatment and is expected to fully recover, police said.

However police are now asking her father to surrender.

"If you know who he is and where he is, please call the police and tell us," Lt. Robert McManus said in a statement Thursday evening. "He placed everyone, especially his daughter, in great danger when he chose to flee from the officers."

Police are not releasing the identity of the father at this time or of the passenger, who was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest.

Investigators have since determined that the driver and his passenger are not connected to the home invasion robbery that police were initially investigating.

That robbery occurred shortly after 8 a.m. in a home in the Washington Manor neighborhood, south of Lewelling Boulevard. Police said four armed men wearing masks entered the home and robbed the residents of cash, jewelry and other personal belongings, before fleeing in a dark blue, four-door compact car. The car is thought to be an import such as a Honda, Nissan or Toyota.
