San Francisco's 1st Elevated Bike Lane Becoming A Reality On Market Street

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- San Francisco's first elevated bike lane is coming to Market Street.

Construction begins Monday on the stretch between 12th and Gough Streets.

Officials with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency say the new raised lane will improve the commute for bikes, cars, and pedestrians.

"It's raised above the street level, so it prevents people from driving into the bike lane easily, and also encourages people to ride their bikes in the bike lane, rather than on the sidewalk," SFMTA Spokesperson Paul Rose said.

An estimated 3,000 bikers ride down Market Street each weekday.
