Facebook Warns Users Targeted By Dangerous State-Sponsored Hacks

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- If your Facebook account appears to be targeted by a state or government-sponsored attack, Facebook will tell you.

In a statement on the Menlo Park-based company's blog, Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos said the company will issue warnings to users to secure their account. A security code will be sent to the user's phone so they can log in.

Stamos said the warning is not an indication of "any compromise of Facebook's platform or systems" and "having an account compromised in this manner may indicate that your computer or mobile device has been infected with malware."

Stamos stressed that attacks of this kind are more "advanced and dangerous than others."
