Death Of Baby Gorilla Results In $1,750 Fine For San Francisco Zoo

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The San Francisco Zoo has been assessed a federal fine in the death of a baby gorilla that was crushed to death last November.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported Friday that the U.S. Department of Agriculture fined the zoo $1,750 for its negligence in the death of 16-month-old Kabibe.

The notification to the zoo, which was obtained by the Chronicle, chides the zoo for failing to handle the animals as expeditiously and carefully as possible.

The baby gorilla died when a zoo employee closed an electric gate on her body. Zoo officials said she darted unexpectedly as it closed.

Some animal rights advocates, including the South Carolina-based International Primate Protection League, criticized the $1,750 fine as too small.

A spokesman for the zoo did not have an immediate comment.
