Family Of Jahi McMath, Girl Declared Brain-Dead Mark 15th Birthday

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) -- The family of a girl who remains on a ventilator to keep her heart beating after she was declared brain-dead nearly two years ago following a sleep apnea operation celebrated her 15th birthday over the weekend.

Jahi McMath's relatives remain embroiled in a lawsuit with UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in Oakland after doctors there declared the girl legally dead in December 2013.

Jahi went into cardiac arrest after doctors removed her tonsils and adenoids to treat sleep apnea. Despite the Alameda County coroner issuing a death certificate, her mother insists she is alive and is keeping her in an undisclosed location in New Jersey.

The milestone came on the heels of Alameda County Superior Court Judge Robert Freedman ruling last week that Jahi's mother can present evidence that she believes her daughter is alive.
