San Ramon: 3.1 Magnitude Quake Strongest Of 9 Quakes In Matter Of Hours

SAN RAMON (CBS SF/KPIX) -- Minor quakes continue to shake the San Ramon area. A total of nine have happened in a matter of a few hours overnight.

A 3.1-magnitude earthquake struck early Tuesday morning about one mile from the city, according to U.S. Geological Survey officials.

The quake struck at 1:46 a.m. and had a depth of 5.7 miles, USGS officials said.

A pair of 2.9 magnitude temblors struck less than an hour later.

Earlier, a smaller 2.7-magnitude earthquake struck Monday night at 10:57 p.m.

Tuesday's quakes are among hundreds of small quakes that have struck in and around the area in the past weeks.

The quakes have been occurring along the Calaveras Fault, which intersects with the Hayward Fault, according to the USGS.

The 2003 Working Group of California Earthquake Probability, which builds forecasts of earthquakes, said there is an 11 percent chance the Calaveras Fault will produce a 6.7-magnitude earthquake or larger in the next 30 years, according to the USGS.
