CHP Officer Struck By Vehicle During Brentwood Pursuit
BRENTWOOD (CBS SF) -- A California Highway Patrol officer was struck by a vehicle Thursday during a Brentwood pursuit, during which two suspects allegedly tossed guns out of their vehicle and were later arrested, CHP officials said.
The episode began at 12:45 p.m., when a CHP officer did a traffic stop on a Honda Civic in Brentwood because the car was missing license plates, CHP spokesman John Fransen said.
When the officer approached the driver's window, Fransen said the Honda sped away. The officer returned to his patrol car to give chase, along with a CHP motorcycle officer who was assisting.
During the pursuit, Fransen said a sweatshirt was thrown out of the suspect vehicle's window that had two pistols with high-caliber magazines wrapped in it. These weapons have been taken in as evidence, Fransen said.
The chase came to a conclusion shortly after the Honda turned down Surrey Court at Valley Green Drive, where the suspect vehicle reached a dead-end and had to make a U-turn, Fransen said.
As it traveled back in the direction it came, the vehicle collided with the CHP officer's patrol car, Fransen said. The officer involved in the crash suffered non-life threatening injuries, he added.
The car's passenger and its driver attempted to flee on foot, but Brentwood police had been monitoring the situation and were in position to apprehend them, Fransen said.
Fransen was not able to provide the identity of the suspects, who were both arrested.
Fransen said the injured officer was taken to a hospital after the collision and is expected to make a full recovery.
