Google, Intel Partner With Tag Heuer To Make 'World's Smartest Luxury Watch'
MOUNTAIN VIEW (CBS/AP) -- A leading Swiss watchmaker and two technology titans have combined forces to produce a computerized wristwatch billed as the "world's smartest luxury watch."
Tag Heuer CEO Jean-Claude Biver says his company has been building mechanical watches for more than a century but knew little about building an Internet-connected device that younger buyers would want. So it partnered with Intel and Google in what he calls the "marriage of Watch Valley and Silicon Valley."
Tag Heuer calls it the Connected Watch.
Various manufacturers have made watches using Google's Android Wear system but they typically look more like mini computers on a wrist rather than a watch.
The Connected is made of titanium and comes in six different rubber wristband colors. Its face measures 46mm.
There are 3 different versions: a chronograph, a 3-hand dial, and a world-time face.
Luxury comes with a price: Tag Heuer Connected starts selling in the U.S. on Monday for $1,500, with other markets to come. By contrast, the cheapest Android Wear watch costs $129. An Apple Watch can cost as much as $17,000.
