Police Kill Gunman On Construction Site Near San Francisco Hospital
SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) -- Police in San Francisco shot and killed a gunman near St. Luke's Hospital in the Mission District after the man appeared on an elevator tower on a construction site, and pointed a rifle at the hospital.
Police responded to St. Luke's Hospital on Cesar Chavez Street around 4;15 p.m. to reports of a man with two firearms walking onto the construction site west of St. Luke's.
Officers arriving to the scene heard two shots fired.
Police say the man had a rifle directed at the hospital. Two officers opened fire, killing the suspect.
A local business owner told KCBS he heard two gunshots around 4:30 p.m. that came from a side of the hospital that is covered in scaffolding.
St. Luke's was put on lockdown, and the incident concluded with multiple police officers opening fire, according to police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza.
San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr described the man as Hispanic and in his late 20s, matching the description of a man who robbed a Big 5 Sporting Goods store in San Bruno earlier in the day.
The man in both incidents was wearing white coveralls, Suhr said.
Police do not know why he did what he did in San Francisco, Suhr said.
The chief said the man allegedly robbed the Big 5 Sporting Goods store of a rifle and ammunition, which he fired shots with in San Francisco. The man allegedly used a handgun to rob the sporting goods store, Suhr said.
People in the area responded to the commotion on social media.
