2-Alarm Fire Damages Richmond Grocery Story

RICHMOND (CBS SF) -- A two-alarm blaze at a grocery store in Richmond Monday morning caused an estimated $1.5 million in damage, fire officials said.

The blaze at Mi Tierra Super Mercado, located at 516 23rd St., led to extensive fire damage, Deputy Fire Chief Emon Usher said.

Firefighters initially responded to the blaze at 1:55 a.m. and brought it under control about two hours later, Usher said. Crews remained at the scene later Monday morning to survey the structure for remaining hot spots.

Usher said the fire began in the store's first floor and was carried up the wall into a second floor, where the damage was most severe.

The first floor also sustained significant water damage, Usher said.

However, a nearby building was spared smoke and fire damage because of the crews' swift actions, Usher said.

No injuries were reported during the fire.

An investigator was still at the scene this morning working to identify the cause of the blaze, Usher said.
