2 Arrested After Police Chase Ends In Berkeley

BERKELEY (CBS SF) -- Two suspects with outstanding warrants were arrested following a pursuit that began in El Sobrante and ended in Berkeley on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office.

The incident began at about 4 p.m. when a driver did not comply as a sheriff's deputy tried to pull him over for a traffic violation at Renfrew Road and Hilltop Drive, according to the sheriff's office.

After failing to yield to the traffic stop, the driver led the deputy on a chase from El Sobrante toward Berkeley on westbound Interstate Highway 80, sheriff's officials said.

When the vehicle headed into oncoming traffic near Berkeley, the deputy terminated the pursuit. However, a supporting California Highway Patrol helicopter crew followed the vehicle, sheriff's officials said.

Berkeley police were alerted that the pursuit was coming into their city at 4:09 p.m. and dispatched officers to assist, police said.

Eventually the vehicle became disabled when it struck a curb at 10th and Grayson streets. The male driver and a female passenger fled in different directions, according to the sheriff's office.

Both suspects, who sheriff's officials said had outstanding arrest warrants, were quickly taken into custody. Deputies also later determined that the car was stolen.

The driver was Victor Casias, 22, of El Sobrante, according to the sheriff's office. He was arrested on suspicion of stealing an automobile, felony evasion, possession of stolen property and drug violations, in addition to the unspecified warrants.

The other suspect was identified by the sheriff's office as Tiffany Baker, 29, of Richmond. She was arrested on a count of resisting an officer, in addition to the outstanding warrant.

Both were booked into Martinez Detention Facility on no-bail status.
