Firefighters Quell 2-Alarm Blaze At Furniture Warehouse In Concord

CONCORD (CBS SF) -- A two-alarm fire in a Concord office furniture store was brought under control without injuries, a Contra Costa Fire Protection District spokesman said Thursday evening.

The fire in the store at Diamond Way and Challenge Drive was first reported around 7:10 p.m., and smoke and flames were already visible from some distance away, Fire Marshal Robert Marshall said.

Firefighters found flames coming through the roof of the building and went into defensive mode, meaning that they fought the fire from the outside rather than entering the building, due to the risk of roof collapse.

Marshall said the fire started in the warehouse portion of the store and damage was extensive in that portion of the building, with the roof burning away.

However, the store had firewalls inside and those kept the fire from spreading to other portions of the building, Marshall said.

The fire was brought under control around 8 p.m. The building was unoccupied and there were no injuries.

The fire's cause remains under investigation. Marshall said investigators were looking at the possibility that it might be linked to a power outage that occurred earlier in the day.
