SFPD Issues Warning Of 'Mystery Shopper' Mail Scam

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- San Francisco police are warning the public about a 'mystery shopper' mail scam.

Victims receive a priority mail envelope with a letter stating they have been selected to become a mystery shopper. A check for several thousand dollars is included along with instructions to deposit it, deduct $200 and wire the remaining money via Western Union to the address provided.

Police warn recipients not to cash the checks because they will not clear due to insufficient funds. Furthermore, victims are responsible for any monies withdrawn, wired, or transferred.

Recipients of these letters should notify the police, or call US Postal Police Inspectors at 1-877-876-2455.
