Storm Packing Rain, Strong Winds Passing Through Bay Area On Thursday

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Thursday morning's commute could be messy as a storm passes through the Bay Area, packing plenty of rain, strong winds and possible thunderstorms.

According to KPIX 5 weather anchor Roberta Gonzales, Wednesday will be mostly cloudy with some showers in the North Bay, with winds from the south and southwest up to 15 miles per hour. On Wednesday night, expect some scattered showers, with winds increasing to 20 miles per hour, stronger in the North Bay.

A wind advisory is expected to go into effect around 10:00 p.m. Wednesday night for the North Bay mountains.

The bulk of the rain, along with wind, is expected to arrive for Thursday morning's commute. Gonzales said winds would come out of the west at 20-30 miles per hour, with stronger gusts to 45 miles per hour, raising the possibility of downed trees and power lines.

On Thursday, there is also a potential for isolated thunderstorms. Dry conditions should return on Friday, with the next round of rain arriving on Sunday.

San Francisco Department of Public Works spokeswoman Rachel Gordon said crews have been out pruning trees in advance of the storm. Crews are also clearing storm drains and city officials have made sandbags available to residents who show proof of residency, Gordon said.

Ten free sand bags are available to each household until 2 p.m. Wednesday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. each week Monday through Saturday at 2323 Cesar Chavez St., Gordon said. She said residents should enter at the Marin and Kansas streets gate.

Residents whose property has flooded in the past should pick up sandbags, Gordon said. The bags weigh 45 pounds each, she said.

High surf conditions are also expected, with breaking waves exceeding 20 to 30 feet at the coast, according to weather service officials.
