MARINA, Monterey County (CBS SF) -- A man was fatally shot by an officer during an alleged assault Thursday night in Marina, police said Friday.

Officers responded to a report of a domestic violence incident at an undisclosed location in the city around 8:20 p.m.

Officers arrived to find an assault in progress and one of them fired at the suspect to defend the female victim, according to police.

The suspect was transported to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas where he was pronounced dead, police said.
