Fairfield Grandmother Confesses To Drowning Grandson In Bathtub
FAIRFIELD (CBS SF) --Fairfield police on Wednesday confirmed that a grandmother who was arrested Tuesday for intentionally drowning her four-year-old grandson in a bathtub has confessed to the crime.
Dispatch received a call at 10:51 a.m. Tuesday morning indicating that a 4-year-old boy had drowned in the 1400 block of Jefferson Street.
Efforts to resuscitate the boy were unsuccessful, according to police.
The boy's grandmother, 51-year-old Dawn Raines-Hewes was taken into custody and is suspected in the killing. She's being held in Solano County Jail without bail.
Neighbors tell KPIX 5 the family was new to the area. Travis Guinn lives just a few houses down from where some believe the drowning took place. He has two young kids of his own.
"We never saw the kids actually like playing outside or congregating with people, so it was a little weird," said Guinn. "There's a bunch of kids in the neighborhood and we've never seen them."
"Officers and fire personnel found a four-year-old little boy who was unconscious and not breathing, said Fairfield Police Officer Cleo Mayoral. "They began resuscitation efforts and the four year old was transported to a nearby trauma center, where he died."
Officers quickly determined the little boy's death was suspicious and that he had been intentionally drowned in the bathtub.
"Because of the nature of the call, the little boy having died and certain statements not adding up with what officers felt the scene indicated, detectives took over the investigation," said Mayoral
There were also two little girls -- a six year old and a one year old -- in the house Tuesday when this all took place, but they were unharmed. They are now in protective custody until further notice.
"I just think there's some neglect going on, definitely," said Guinn. "You know in the sense of maybe too much on their plate trying to handle all the kids at once."
The investigation is ongoing and Raines-Hewes is being held without bail. She is expected to be arraigned Thursday.
