Slippery Black Ice Causes Spin Outs, Road Closure In East Bay

ORINDA (CBS SF) -- Freezing temperatures caused black ice before dawn Wednesday in the East Bay.

Several cars spun out on the Fish Ranch Road offramp from Highway 24 in Orinda.

The CHP closed the ramp until after the sun came up to allow for the ice to melt.

Temperatures in the area dropped down to about 30 degrees.

Black ice is not actually black, it is transparent. The black road underneath gives it its color. Unlike snow, tires lose traction on black ice.
