Fairfield Woman Formally Charged With Drowning Grandson

FAIRFIELD (CBS SF) -- A Fairfield woman accused of drowning her young grandson appeared in court and was formally charged with the four-year-old boy's murder Thursday, according to authorities.

51-year-old Dawn Diana Raines-Hewes made her first appearance in Solano County Superior Court Thursday afternoon.

Investigators said she was arrested on Tuesday after left her four-year-old grandson in the bathtub with the intent of drowning him.

In a statement Wednesday, Fairfield police said that during the investigation, Raines-Hewes admitted to the intentional act of drowning the child.

Raines-Hewes was formally charged with murder and child abuse causing death. The District Attorney submitted 39 pages of discovery including her criminal record.

Raines-Hawes was convicted of DUI a few years ago.

Two other grandchildren, a 1-year-old girl and a 6-year-old girl, were also under the grandmother's care. Police say they were not harmed.

A motive has not been released. She remains jailed without bail. If convicted, she faces 25 years to life in prison.

It was not clear Thursday if she has an attorney. But several extended relatives called her a loving and caring woman.

Her arraignment was postponed to January 7.
