Teen Charged In Slaying Of Oakland City Councilwoman's Grandson
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A teenage suspect has been arrested and charged in the December 20 fatal shooting that killed the grandson of Oakland City Council President Lynette Gibson McElhaney, according to police.
On December 20 at approximately 1:40 p.m., Oakland Police officers responded to reports of a shooting on the 900 block of Mandela Parkway. Upon arrival, they located a juvenile Oakland resident suffering from gunshot wounds.
Officers initiated first aid and CPR until emergency medical personnel arrived on scene. The victim, who was later identified as 17-year-old Torian Hughes of Oakland, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Several days later, it was revealed that Hughes was McElhaney's grandson.
McElhaney wrote a post on Facebook following Hughes' death, mourning her grandson's passing.
"His death, and the shootings throughout Oakland ... only strengthen my resolve for eradicating gun violence in our city. None of us, not one of us is immune. This crisis can be reversed," she wrote.
The Oakland City Council President was among several dozen people who gathered for a Christmas Eve vigil to remember Hughes.
While details on the arrest of the suspect were not made available, on Tuesday police announced that the Alameda County District Attorney's Office charged a 15-year-old male juvenile with the murder of Torian Hughes on Monday, January 4.
Because of the suspect's age, the proceedings are being handled in the Alameda County Juvenile Court and authorities are withholding the name and photo of the juvenile in the case.
