Man Returns Dog Snatched From Oakland SPCA, Apologizes
OAKLAND (CBS SF) – A man apologized Tuesday morning when he called to tell officials with the East Bay Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals that he wanted to return a dog he snatched from them in Oakland on Sunday morning.
The man called to apologize sometime before 8:30 a.m. for causing trouble and told shelter officials he left the dog, a 2-year-old black and white pit bull mix named Daisymae, on a street corner, SPCA officials said.
A person from the Rocket Dog Rescue Urban Sanctuary then left a voicemail with the shelter saying the man left the dog with them.
SPCA staff went quickly to the sanctuary to pick up Daisymae, shelter officials said.
The man took Daisymae at 10:50 a.m. Sunday from the shelter's adoption center located at 8323 Baldwin St. in Oakland.
A shelter volunteer was walking the dog around the shelter's parking lot and play yard when the man stopped to inquire about her.
The volunteer turned after the conversation ended and the man then snatched Daisymae from the volunteer and fled in a sedan.
SPCA officials are not releasing the name of the man and have not yet decided whether to seek charges, SPCA spokeswoman Jessica Perrin said.
Daisymae came to the shelter as a stray in November. She needed medical treatment to remove masses before being adopted, according to the SPCA.
Veterinarians with the shelter's Theodore B. Travers Family Veterinary Clinic examined Daisymae after she was returned Tuesday and said she was in good health except for the masses.
Veterinary officials have rescheduled Daisymae's treatment for the masses, according to the SPCA.
