Super Bowl Travelers Have Rolling Hotel Option With Camper Vans

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A Bay Area company that specializes in renting vans that can sleep multiple people may be offering up the only penthouse in San Francisco that isn't already reserved during Super Bowl Week.

Jucy Van is one of a growing number of companies offering what you could describe as hotel rooms on wheels. Though this weekend, Jucy is the only one catering specifically to the Super Bowl crowd.

Sleeping up to four people, these mobile hotel rooms are made up of more than just a bed and four wheels.

Equipped with hot plate, a "dining room," running water and even a kitchen sink, a Jucy camper van could be just the ticket for an out-of-town Super Bowl fan still looking for a place to stay.

"We just thought it was a great option for people who like tailgating and just going basically and celebrating with friends," said Jucy Rentals spokesperson Brandy Wittaker.

While rates start $42 a night, the company is currently offering their 3-day, $499 Super bowl package that includes a camp ground reservation with party food, beer and a rec room to watch the big game.

The catch? The camp ground is in Santa Cruz.

Renters who want to check out Super Bowl City can simply break down and hit the road, but there are a couple of things to keep in mind once they get to San Francisco.

Francis Mueller of Escape Camper Vans, one of Jucy's competitors, warns that ordinances in some cities ban sleeping in your car.

"Legally they not allowed to sleep on the street," said Muller.

However, San Francisco does allow sleeping in vehicles between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., but you have to check for no parking and street cleaning signs.

Mueller highly recommended sleeping at a camp site or rest stop. Like Jucy, they've pimped their rides to include the kitchen sink, but not a bathroom.

As for tailgating, SFPD told KPIX 5 that as long as the car is parked, you can have open container in the back.

This trend got started in New Zeland about 20 years ago, but is relatively new to the U.S.

The companies say they normally cater to international travelers, but this could be a cost-effective road trip option for anyone, combining a car rental and hotel in one.
