Fairfield Mall Baseball Bat Attack Victim Dies

FAIRFIELD (CBS SF) -- A Suisun City woman who was assaulted and robbed at a Fairfield mall died of her injuries Friday morning, a Fairfield police lieutenant said.

Police identified her as 63-year-old Cheryl Ann Sherwood.

Sherwood was struck from behind in the head with a baseball bat as she walked to her car at the mall around noon Wednesday. The suspect took her purse and fled, Fairfield police said.

Fairfield fire and medical personnel were inside the mall in response to a different call at the time of the attack on Sherwood, and their ambulances with their emergency lights on were just yards away from where Sherwood was attacked, Lt. Rob Lenke said.

Sherwood suffered significant head injuries and was taken to a trauma center where she was listed in critical condition.

William David King, 19, of Vallejo, was arrested later on  Wednesday in Vallejo for an attempted murder and robbery of a 37-year-old woman at the Wells Fargo bank at 1702 Tennessee St. as she walked to her car around 11:10 a.m. Tuesday.

The victim was struck in the head several times with a hammer, causing her to drop the money she was carrying, and the suspect fled in a vehicle, Vallejo police Lt. Joe Iacono said.

Vallejo police set up surveillance Wednesday afternoon in the 100 block of Fairmont Avenue in Vallejo. Police stopped a vehicle occupied by King that was believed to be involved in the Vallejo robbery and assault.

King confessed to the Vallejo incident and was arrested.

Vallejo police learned later on Wednesday about the assault on Sherwood in Fairfield.

King was connected to the Fairfield incident when Sherwood's purse was found in the vehicle, Lenke said.
