Multiple Buildings Collapse In 6.4 Taiwan Earthquake

(CBS SF) -- A strong earthquake with a 6.4 magnitude struck the southern end of Taiwan early Saturday, toppling buildings on the island.

Information on casualties was not immediately available, but local news reports described dozens of people trapped in at least one high-rise building, as well as a large number rescued.

The earthquake struck just before 4:00 a.m. Saturday morning local time (11:57 a.m. Friday Pacific time) about 19 miles east-southeast of Tainan, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Images posted to Twitter showed a number of buildings toppled or severely damaged.

Images from Taiwan television showed firefighters pulling people out from a collapsed high-rise building. Taiwan's official news agency said rescuers have pulled out more than 120 people from a collapsed 16-story residential high-rise in Tainan city. The Central News Agency says about 200 people were believed to be still inside the Wei Guan building.
