3-Alarm Fire Burns Cliffside House In Pacifica

PACIFICA (CBS SF) -- Firefighters battled a 3-alarm blaze Friday afternoon in a structurally unsafe oceanfront home in Pacifica that had been deemed uninhabitable due to deteriorating bluffs and coastal erosion below.

At about 2:30 p.m., fire officials received a report of a fire happening at 1070 Palmetto Ave., according to North County Fire officials.

Firefighters found the house fully involved in the fire, which was threatening to spread into nearby commercial properties.

Their efforts were complicated by falling power lines, as well as risks posed by the building's precarious position on the eroding bluffs.

By about 3:30 p.m., firefighters were able to knock down the blaze, but most of the firefighters remained on scene for roughly four hours.

A smaller contingent is remaining on scene overnight to watch for flare-ups, firefighters said.

Fire officials are investigating what caused the fire. They will not be able to enter the building to determine the point of origin, however, due to it's structural instability.

No injuries were reported, according to fire officials.
