Pedestrians Struck By Blowgun Darts On Golden Gate Bridge

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Pedestrians walking on the Golden Gate Bridge were struck by darts from a blowgun on Friday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A CHP officer patrolling the bridge by bicycle was flagged down by a pedestrian around 2:45 p.m. Friday, near the Vista Point parking lot.

The pedestrian told the CHP officer that he had been walking north on the east side of the bridge when he was struck in the thigh by a long metal dart.

The dart penetrated his jeans and went between 1 and 2 inches into his skin.

An ambulance was requested to the scene as a precaution, but as officers were speaking with the victim, another pedestrian approached the group and said she too had been struck by a dart.

The woman, who had also been walking north on the east side of the bridge, was struck in her knee cap with a dart identical to the dart that struck the first victim, according to the CHP.

Paramedics evaluated both victims before releasing them at the scene.

The metal darts, which are about 5 inches in length and believed to have been fired from a blowgun, are in the process of being tested to ensure that they were not coated with any chemicals, CHP officials said.

Investigators are working to identify suspects and checking any and all footage that may have captured the crime on camera.

Anyone who may have seen the incident, which occurred between 2 and 2:30 p.m., is urged to contact the CHP at (415) 924-1100.
