Student Hit, Pinned By Car Outside Dublin High School

DUBLIN (CBS SF) -- A 12-year-old Wells Middle School student broke his arm in a couple of places when he was hit by and trapped underneath a car Wednesday morning outside of Dublin High School, a police captain said.

The collision was first reported at 7:51 a.m. near the high school at 8151 Village Parkway, police and fire officials said.

The boy was on a bicycle riding on the sidewalk and the driver of the car was pulling out of a parking lot when the collision occurred, police Capt. Garrett Holmes said.

The driver was looking left to check traffic and when he pulled out he did not see the boy, Holmes said.

Police are not planning to arrest the driver, a 72-year-old man, because no criminal action occurred, according to Holmes.

The boy will probably spend the night in the hospital for observation. He had some abrasions besides the broken bones.

The boy was wearing a helmet.

"He's very, very lucky," Capt. Garrett Holmes said of the boy. "This could have been terrible."

Firefighters used a hydraulic airbag system and the Jaws of Life to lift the car to rescue the boy.

"They had to lift it up pretty high" because he was entwined with the car, Holmes said.

Paramedics landed a helicopter on the high school's softball field to take the boy to Children's Hospital in Oakland for treatment.

The driver of the car was at the high school dropping off his granddaughter before the collision.
