Sorry, McFly; SF State Bans Hoverboards Over Fire Concerns

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF & AP) -- Students at San Francisco State University will have to come back from the future, as hoverboards have been banned from campus due to fire concerns.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that students have been informed that the two-wheeled, self-balancing devices are banned on school grounds and in dormitories.

Bicycles, scooters, roller skates and skateboards are already prohibited on campus.

However, University Police Department Chief Reginald Parson has admitted the ban will be hard to enforce.

"It's going to take more than a written policy for the ban on hoverboards (to be effective)," Hong told a university gathering last week.

The ban not only will take effect on the SF State campus, but across the state college system.

At Chico State, officials sent a letter to their students saying -- "Students who currently have them (hoverboards) should have them removed from the residence halls. Students who are returning from break, should not bring them to campus."

Delta, American, United, Alaska and Southwest Airlines also no longer allow hoverboards or similar devices in checked luggage, or as a carry-on.

Hoverboards have also been named as possible sources of home fires over recent months in Santa Rosa and San Leandro.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission and National Fire Protection Association in December released warnings about fire hazards associated with hoverboards.
