2nd Body In 2 Days Found On Bodega Bay Beach

BODEGA BAY (CBS SF) -- A body was found on a Bodega Bay beach Tuesday, a day after a missing attorney was also found there, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office.

The body of Channing Gardner, 62, of Santa Rosa, was discovered near Bodega Dunes south of Salmon Creek, sheriff's officials said.

Sheriff's Sgt. Cecile Focha said Wednesday Gardner's cause of death has not been determined but there does not appear to be any indication of foul play.

The discovery of a second body in nearly the same spot was unusual, Focha said.

A badly decomposed body found there at about 8:15 a.m. Monday was identified Tuesday as 56-year-old Steven Mitchell of Santa Rosa.

Mitchell was reported missing by his wife Feb. 13 and the sheriff's office discovered evidence indicating he died by suicide. The coroner's office has scheduled an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of Mitchell's death.

Mitchell represented Sonoma County in a civil suit after sheriff's Deputy Erick Gelhaus fatally shot 13-year-old Andy Lopez on Oct. 22, 2013. Lopez had been carrying a toy gun that looked like an assault rifle.
